About Us
Cycling New Plymouth Club Inc (CNP) is a friendly New Plymouth based club catering for racing and leisure cyclists from novices to veterans. Our origins are based from 1911. We have a rich history where members past and present have excelled on the national stage and gone on to represent New Zealand.
Our Premier event on the Taranaki Road Cycling calendar has always been the Round the Mountain Race, first raced in 1911. This is currently under somewhat of a revival, with numbers increasing each year since 2001. CNP has undertaken the organisation of this event on behalf of the Taranaki Cycling Association, an association of the Taranaki Road Cycling Clubs (formed in the early 1950's).
Our aims are twofold; to provide a racing program for our members, and also to encourage more people to take up cycling and cycle racing in the North Taranaki Area.
We have approximately 100 active members, placing us in the top 10 of NZ Road Cycling Clubs by membership. We cater for a wide range of rider abilities, from National riders to Veterans (over 35), from a multi-sport background, to juniors and beginners. We have a large proportion of Veteran Class Riders, and have 2 current Oceania Champions. It would be fair to say that the strength of CNP is in the Veteran participation.
Casual riders and new riders are most welcome to join our races. New riders can ride in up to 3 rides before deciding whether to join the club.
The 2008 race program will start on February 9th and run through to October 11th. Major feasutres of the 2008 race program will be:
- The Round the Mountain Classic Race on October 4th;
- The Queens Birthday 3 day tour
We are affilitated to BIKENZ, and our races are sanctioned by them, so any riders who partake in more than 3 CNP organised races are required to have a 2008 BikeNZ affiliated licence, Club, Centre (West Coast North Island) or National, so they and CNP are covered by BikeNZ’s comprehensive personal liability insurance.
